The Bible (1 Kings 7:23) describes a circular object in the Temple that was 10 cubits in diameter and 30 cubits in circumference. This suggests that the value of pi is 3... or does it? In this Erev Pi Day class, we will dig into two millennia of rabbinic conversations that seek to answer this question.

Adam Levine, a former Cantabrigian, is an associate professor of mathematics at Duke University. He has taught about pi and other topics in rabbinic mathematics in various settings, including a week-long course at the National Havurah Committee Summer Institute. He currently helps run a traditional-egalitarian minyan at Beth El Synagogue in Durham, and he loves playing softball, reading Torah, and constructing crossword puzzles.
